The exceptionally stylish 2017 Mercedes C300 Coupe demands attention

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fcard%2fimage%2f89941%2f300_coupe_thumb
Admittedly, the German carmaker is right. With a bedazzled grille, sharp sidelines and a butt that would make a Kardashian envious, it's great to look at.

What Mercedes is really admitting by calling it stylish, though, is that the C300 Coupe exists solely because of its design. Moreover, people will choose it not for what it does but for what it represents. It's a car that tells the world you've got an eye for design.

At first blush, for me, simply making a style statement wasn't at all worth the $43,000 base price. An unrelated weekend shopping trip changed my mind, though. I finally get the compact two-door Benz.
What it's not
Just minutes into my first time behind the wheel of the C300 Coupe, I slammed the throttle into the carpet and played audience to the tone of the car's 241-horsepower four-cylinder engine.

If you'd asked me to intuit what the C300's engine might sound like before actually having heard it, based upon its classy exterior, I would have wagered a note somewhere between Miles Davis and a panther. You know, urbane but also animalistic.

Instead, the thing was decidedly buzzy but with a sporty twinge, like a hive of very brawny bees. Admittedly, it's not exactly the enlivening or sophisticated tone I had hoped for.

Although the athletic apian engine can propel the car to 60 mph from a standstill in 5.9 seconds, the note immediately informed me this was not a car aimed at driving enthusiasts. Granted, the steering is quick and heavy and the suspension soft but taut. However, those seemed to reinforce the car's highly evolved nature, rather than push it into the realm of sport. You'll want the newly created C43 for that.

Striking driving-enthusiast mobile off the list, I turned to the tech.

At the top of the wood-encrusted center console is Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system, displayed from a tablet-like screen attached to the dash. It's a polarizing design, for sure. Whether you like the looks or not, you have to give the designers kudos for trying something different.
IMAGE: MERCEDES-BENZ

What you can't nod in approval over is the COMAND system itself. Users interface with it through either a touchpad or a scroll wheel mounted just beneath it. It's a quick system with lots of functionality, but none of it is intuitive or easy. It's the antithesis of user friendly.

What's more, the C300 Coupe doesn't offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (it might get those in 18 months or so, Mercedes informed me) nor does it have Wi-Fi. Both features are common not only in the segment but in inexpensive economy cars these days.

Granted, the C300 does offer tons of semi-autonomous safety tech called DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist. I first tested this system on the C300's bigger, faster brother, the C63 Sedan, last year. It's great as an adaptive cruise control system. However, it lacks the robust steering assist of Tesla's Autopilot.

Those things said, I decided the C300 Coupe wasn't a car pushing the boundaries of automotive technology either. So tech car, too, was removed from the record.

Adding further confusion to my uncertainty of what exactly the C300 Coupe was trying to be, most of the cars we drove at the drive event in Maine were loaded up with all the bells and whistles. In fact, most were priced around the $60,000 mark. This, as you might understand, is a lot of money for a compact coupe that won't drive itself or tear holes in your clothes with its straight-line speed.

Even days after attending the Maine event, I was still at a loss at how to encapsulate the C300 Coupe.

"What's the point of this car?" I murmured to myself, as I hemmed and hawed through countless drafts of the my first drive with it.

Then, this weekend, it all fell into place. I finally got it.
Superstar adjacent

Window shopping in Beverly Hills with a buddy of mine this weekend, we popped into a chic men's clothing boutique. Aimlessly thumbing through the racks, I stumbled across a dark ox-blood red cafe-racer leather jacket. It had asymmetrical lines and quilted shoulders — classic but modern. It looked like something Steve McQueen would wear, if he were still alive today.

As a guy who grew up in the decidedly un-flashy and animal rights-friendly Pacific Northwest, I am not one for leather jackets. So, it's not something I'd normally be drawn to. Despite that, it grabbed me. I pulled it off the rack and popped it on.

To my surprise, it fit me like a glove. I looked at the price tag and I nearly fainted. In face of the price, I felt virtually hypnotized by the thing, how it looked, how it made me feel. In it, I felt like I could pass as a member of Ryan Reynolds' entourage.

Feeling an undeniable draw to buy it, I texted pictures to a slew of my friends, all of whom had different tastes and opinions. To my chagrin, all responded in the affirmative, encouraging me to get it. So I did.

It was then, walking out of that boutique with a very expensive leather jacket under my arm that I understood the draw of the C300 Coupe.

Like the jacket, the C300 Coupe isn't the sportiest or most cutting-edge. However, both turned heads. And there's something to be said for that. Normally, a $40,000-something car doesn't attract crowds but the C300 Coupe did. In the coupe, again like in the jacket, I felt not like a superstar, but rather superstar adjacent.

Moreover, the C300 Coupe represents a certain point in your life. It's the kind of car when you reach a level in your career or age where you can say, "Yeah, I need this not just because I need a car to get to work, but because I want something that makes me feel good and turns some heads from time to time."

So, really, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe is essentially the "treat yo'self" car.

Group that advocated for Iran nuclear deal also funded media that covered it

NPR HQ
A group the White House recently identified as a key surrogate in selling the Iran nuclear deal gave National Public Radio $100,000 last year to help it report on the pact and related issues, according to the group's annual report. It also funded reporters and partnerships with other news outlets.

The Ploughshares Fund's mission is to "build a safe, secure world by developing and investing in initiatives to reduce and ultimately eliminate the world's nuclear stockpiles," one that dovetails with President Barack Obama's arms control efforts. But its behind-the-scenes role advocating for the Iran agreement got more attention this month after a candid profile of Ben Rhodes, one of the president's top foreign policy aides.

In The New York Times Magazine article, Rhodes explained how the administration worked with nongovernmental organizations, proliferation experts and even reporters to build support for the seven-nation accord that curtailed Iran's nuclear activity and softened international financial penalties on Tehran.

"We created an echo chamber," said Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser, adding that "outside groups like Ploughshares" helped carry out the administration's message effectively.

The magazine piece revived Republican criticism of the Iran agreement as they suggested it was evidence of a White House spin machine misleading the American people. The administration accused opponents of trying to re-litigate the deal after failing to defeat it in congressional votes last year.

Outside groups of all stripes are increasingly giving money to news organizations for special projects or general news coverage. Most news organizations, including The Associated Press, have strict rules governing whom they can accept money from and how to protect journalistic independence.

Ploughshares' backing is more unusual, given its prominent role in the rancorous, partisan debate over the Iran deal.

The Ploughshares grant to NPR supported "national security reporting that emphasizes the themes of U.S. nuclear weapons policy and budgets, Iran's nuclear program, international nuclear security topics and U.S. policy toward nuclear security," according to Ploughshares' 2015 annual report, recently published online.
Obama aide Ben Rhodes won't testify to Congress on Iran deal 'narratives'

"It is common practice for foundations to fund media coverage of underreported stories," Ploughshares spokeswoman Jennifer Abrahamson said. Funding "does not influence the editorial content of their coverage in any way, nor would we want it to."

Ploughshares has funded NPR's coverage of national security since 2005, the radio network said. Ploughshares reports show at least $700,000 in funding over that time. All grant descriptions since 2010 specifically mention Iran.

"It's a valued partnership, without any conditions from Ploughshares on our specific reporting, beyond the broad issues of national and nuclear security, nuclear policy, and nonproliferation," NPR said in an emailed statement. "As with all support received, we have a rigorous editorial firewall process in place to ensure our coverage is independent and is not influenced by funders or special interests."

Republican lawmakers will have concerns nonetheless, especially as Congress supplies NPR with a small portion of its funding. Just this week, the GOP-controlled House Oversight Committee tried to summon Rhodes to a hearing entitled "White House Narratives on the Iran Nuclear Deal," but he refused.

Ploughshares' links to media are "tremendously troubling," said Rep. Mike Pompeo of Kansas, an Iran-deal critic.

Pompeo told the AP he repeatedly asked NPR to be interviewed last year as a counterweight to a Democratic supporter of the agreement, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, who he said regularly appeared on the station. But NPR refused to put Pompeo on the air, he said. The station said it had no record of Pompeo's requests, and listed several prominent Republicans who were featured speaking about the deal or economic sanctions on Iran.

Another who appeared on NPR is Joseph Cirincione, Ploughshares' president. He spoke about the negotiations on air at least twice last year. The station identified Ploughshares as an NPR funder one of those times; the other time, it didn't.

Ploughshares boasts of helping to secure the deal. While success was "driven by the fearless leadership of the Obama administration and supporters in Congress," board chairwoman Mary Lloyd Estrin wrote in the annual report, "less known is the absolutely critical role that civil society played in tipping the scales towards this extraordinary policy victory."

The 33-page document lists the groups that Ploughshares funded last year to advance its nonproliferation agenda.

The Arms Control Association got $282,500; the Brookings Institution, $225,000; and the Atlantic Council, $182,500. They received money for Iran-related analysis, briefings and media outreach, and non-Iran nuclear work.

Other groups, less directly defined by their independent nuclear expertise, also secured grants.

J-Street, the liberal Jewish political action group, received $576,500 to advocate for the deal. More than $281,000 went to the National Iranian American Council.

Princeton University got $70,000 to support former Iranian ambassador and nuclear spokesman Seyed Hossein Mousavian's "analysis, publications and policymaker engagement on the range of elements involved with the negotiated settlement of Iran's nuclear program."

Ploughshares has set its sights on other media organizations, too.

In a "Cultural Strategy Report" on its website, the group outlined a broader objective of "ensuring regular and accurate coverage of nuclear issues in reputable and strategic media outlets" such as The Guardian, Salon, the Huffington Post or Pro Publica.

Previous efforts failed to generate enough coverage, it noted. These included "funding of reporters at The Nation and Mother Jones and a partnership with The Center for Public Integrity to create a national security desk." It suggested using "web videos, podcasts, photo-based stories" and other "attention-grabbing formats" for "creatively reframing the issue."

The Center for Public Integrity's CEO, Peter Bale, confirmed the grant.

"None of the funding received by Ploughshares was for coverage of the Iran deal," said Bale, whose company received $70,000. "In general, we avoided that subject because the topic did not lend itself to the type of investigative reporting the Center does."

Caitlin Graf, a spokeswoman at The Nation, said her outlet had no partnership with Ploughshares. She referred queries to The Nation Institute, a nonprofit associated with the magazine that seeks to strengthen the independent press and advance social justice. Taya Kitman, the institute's director, said Ploughshares' one-year grant supported reporting on U.S.-Iran policy, but strict editorial control was maintained.

Mother Jones' media department didn't respond to several messages seeking comment.

Associated Press

The AP has taken grants from nonpolitical groups and journalism foundations such as the Knight Foundation. As with all grants, "AP retains complete editorial control of the final news product, which must fully meet AP standards for independence and integrity," Standards Editor Thomas Kent said.

Akwa Ibom monarch’s wife gives birth to a baby in kidnappers’ den

Mrs Ubong Assam, the wife of the traditional ruler of Esit Eket in Akwa Ibom, was delivered of a baby girl on Friday, May 13, while in custody of her kidnappers.

A family source, who pleaded anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Esit Eket, Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, on Saturday that the monarch’s wife gave birth to the baby in an unknown hideout of her abductors

NAN recalls that the kidnappers abducted the traditional ruler’s wife and her four children in the Akpautong neighbourhood of Esit Eket on April 29.

The source said that the kidnappers quickly released the woman and her four children due to the birth of the baby in their den.

Reacting to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom, ASP Cordelia Nwawe, said that the command expressed appreciation to God for the safe delivery of the monarch’s wife.

She, nonetheless, said that the command had yet to receive any information about the release of the kidnapped woman and her four children.

NAN, however, reports that the traditional ruler’s wife and her four children were released on May 14.

iPhone 7S news looks to 2017 for glass design

iPhone 7S design
The rumors of the iPhone 7 looking very much the same as the iPhone 6 and 6s are very much persistent, which has led to people coming up with the hashtag #iPhone7boycott. The strange thing is, there is no proof that this will be the case, although a recurring rumor that the iPhone 2017 update will be made of glass does seem to fuel the fire once again.
If we are to believe latest rumor, then the iPhone 7S news would seem as though it will be made mostly of glass, although this needs to be taken with a grain of salt seeing as though we have heard such things before.

Let’s say for one moment that there is in fact some truth to this, then we might not be hearing about the iPhone 7S design, but rather the iPhone 8. We say this because next year will be the 10th anniversary for the iPhone, and so Apple could skip the S version and jump straight to the iPhone 8 model, and make some massive changes.

The report comes from The Independent, who says that one of the biggest suppliers suggest that Apple is making plans for a future iPhone to be made mostly from glass.

Some of the suppliers for the metal casing could lose a lot of business of this is the case, although with Apple still having some products made from metal, the blow should not be that big, especially as other phone makers would likely up orders to better compete with the competition.

There is a catch here though, as it is suggested that only the one iPhone model would come with a glass casing, and that could very well be a Pro version, much like you now have the iPad Pro.

In terms of the iPhone 7S or whatever version will come with a glass casing design, it’s not going to be cheap because of the use of new technologies.

When thinking of what it would look like though, we have to think of something a bit like the current iPhone now, although with a front a back similar to that of the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Huge Plans for Roman Reigns Title

Roman Reigns in current Reigning defending champion currently feuding with AJ Styles. A WWE creative and friend of a reporter of mine told my guy that there are no plans of removing belt from Roman Reigns's shoulder at least till Summerslam 2016. WWE officials specially Vince McMahon and Triple H are really high on Roman Reign and want him to be the champion as long as possible.

There are also news that Roman Reigns is gonna defend his title successfully at Extreme Rules 2016. No plans for his heel turn yet, According to the guy who gave us the updates, There are surely some suggestions about heel turn of Roman Reigns but WWE officials and creative are not so much impressed by the suggestions. WWE may plan about Roman Reigns's dropping title to someone else at Summerslam 2016 or afterwards but till Summerslam 2016 there are no plans for WWE World Heavyweight Title's shoulder change.

See What Happens When a Man Makes Love With a Pregnant Woman (Photo)

So, what’s the truth? Is it possible for a man to poke the baby in the head with the tip of his penis while he’s having sex with his partner or wife? Before we tell you if the answer is– “yes” or “no,” first, a brief anatomy lesson. The growing baby is floating inside a sac of amniotic fluid which is floating inside the amniotic sac inside the uterus.
The ultrasound picture above is of an actual penis inside a woman who is 6 months pregnant. The white colored area above the penis is the cervix. Beyond that is the uterus, amniotic sac and baby. As you can see, the direction of the penis is down. During sex, the penis fits in a space underneath the cervix and uterus.

So, what’s the answer? Can you poke the baby in the head during sex with the tip of the penis?

No. It’s not possible, because the baby is protected behind the rigid cervix, uterus, and amniotic fluid.
ALTHOUGH…

It is possible to “jostle” the baby.
Wait. What?
Yes. It’s possible for a man, regardless of his penis’ length, to gently jostle or push the baby.

However… It’s no more of a jostle than the baby would experience if the pregnant woman were to run up a set of stairs or to exercise. As you can see from the photo, it’s quite possible for the shaft of the penis to “brush up against” the cervix, which could, in turn, “jostle” the contents of the amniotic sac… and thus, “jostle” the growing baby

The uterus is protected by the cervix, a rigid barrier to the vagina which slowly opens over the course of the pregnancy. The birth canal is 3 to 7 inches in length, depending on the woman’s state of arousal.

Obsessed Man U fan calls off wedding after falling in 'love' with Adnan Janujaz (photos)

24 year old Mai Alexander, a Manchester United fan who became obsessed with winger Adnan Januzaj called off her own wedding after 'falling in love' with the player.

She developed a crush on the Belgian player after watching him make his United debut at the age of 18 in August 2013.

She quickly became infatuated with the starlet and began mapping out a future life with him.

Despite the fact she'd never met him, Mai planned their wedding, chose a house, and even picked out names for their children.
The make-up artist spent hours trawling through his social media pages, stalking his every move and posting him more than 200 handwritten letters.

She also splashed £2,000 on fake tan, false nails and glam outfits to look like his stunning girlfriend Melissa McKenzie and £2,500 more on Man United merchandise.
Mai was so convinced she was in a relationship with the Premier League footballer that she stopped hugging and kissing her long-term boyfriend because it felt like cheating.

When her friends suggested she might never be with him she became suicidal.
In July 2015, two years after first seeing Adnan on TV, infatuated Mai saw a photo of him with his beau and it finally sent her over the edge.

She wrote a suicide note for the footballer telling him she loved him and slashed her wrists in a desperate bid to kill herself.

Fortunately her boyfriend, 23-year-old warehouse operator Stefan Hall, found her and dialled 999.

After receiving treatment at hospital, Mai was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and spent nine weeks in a secure unit where she received treatment for OCD.

Now, almost three years after watching Adnan's debut, Mai has come out the other side to bravely speak about her former obsession.

Incredibly, devoted Stefan has stayed with her through it all - even when she cancelled their engagement - and the couple's wedding is now fixed for 2018.
Mai told Uk Mirror: "I remember the first match I laid eyes on him - I really fancied him. I was with my dad and I said, 'he's cute'.

"He told me he was new and I had to find out more so I followed him on Instragram and Twitter and scrolled right to the beginning of his accounts.

"I would get really jealous if they said he was hot - it was heart-crushing. I felt like he was my boyfriend and I hated that other girls found him attractive."

My Father Caused the Death of My Kids & Two Husbands, So I Killed Him – Lady Opens Up

Why are people resorting to extreme violence these days? Sigh! The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Glory Dan, 31, over the murder of her 75-year-old father, Mr. Bassey Udo.

The murder was said to have been reported to police by village head of Mbiakpan Atan, Chief Linus Okon, in Ibiono Ibom area of the state.

Confessing to the crime, Glory said, “My father has been responsible for the death of all my children, including my two husbands. It was my [late] mother who revealed it to me in a dream when I washed my face and went to her tombstone and cried to her.”
The state Police PRO, Cordelia Nwawe, said on Tuesday that the crime was first reported at ‘D’ Division Itam on May 10 and was subsequently transferred to SCID, Uyo on May 16 for investigation.

She said the complainant alleged that on May 10, at 1940hrs, he was in his house, when he received a call from one of his subjects that the suspect, one Glory Dan, female, broke into her father’s room, hit him (father) on the head with an object that caused his death.

Nwawe stated that following the report, the complainant and witnesses made their statements and revealed that the deceased was living alone in his house.

“That on May 10, at about 1940 hours, the suspect armed with a stick, broke into the deceased’s room and hit him to death. They concluded that they heard the deceased screaming in his room; ‘Don’t kill me’.

“The suspect was arrested, cautioned and charged. She volunteered a statement confessing to the crime of murder. She stated further that she attacked the deceased because he was a wizard and also responsible for the death of her five children and two husbands.”

A Must Have Car This 2016 {2016 GMC Acadia}

First Drive Review

General Motors’ aging Lambda-platform utility vehicles—which include the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and the now dead Saturn Outlook—have always been practical as big, three-row crossovers. Their extra-large dimensions, though, positioned them a bit too close to full-size SUVs for the tastes of those who might prefer, say, the Toyota Highlander. Although the all-new 2017 Acadia has shrunk considerably both in size and feel, our brief first exposure reveals it to be more capable than ever, as well as much better to drive.

Sales of the second-generation Acadia start later this spring, and the first-gen model will continue to be sold alongside it for a while as the Acadia Limited. Compared with the older model, the 2017 version has a shorter wheelbase (by 6.4 inches) and overall length (7.2 inches) and is 3.5 inches narrower. Claimed curb weights are about 700 pounds lighter. Much of the weight loss comes from the smaller footprint, but the chassis it shares with the 2017 Cadillac XT5 also makes use of more high-strength steel and advanced sound-deadening materials to pare mass.

Lighter Is Always Better

We’ll confirm the true result of the Acadia’s diet once we get an example on our scales, but we can say the new version felt significantly smaller and more composed on our initial drive through the congested traffic of Washington, D.C., and over undulating country roads in neighboring Virginia. Less mass helps the Acadia stop with greater stability, accelerate more assertively, and change direction with improved control. Overall ride quality is good, even on the optional 20-inch wheels (18s are standard), while road and wind noise are minimal.

The GMC’s electrically assisted steering feels tight and precise for a big crossover, the firm brake pedal offers good modulation, and the chassis is nicely tuned to minimize body roll in corners. Michigan’s broken roads no doubt will provide a greater challenge for the new Acadia’s front strut and multilink rear suspensions, but the available driver-adjustable dampers should help. A $1200 option on higher trim levels, they work via a new terrain-selector dial on the console, which adjusts the steering effort, throttle response, transmission shift points, and drivetrain settings for various on- and off-road modes. We didn’t get to experience any serious muddin’ on our route, but the selector also adjusts the new All Terrain model’s Active Twin Clutch all-wheel-drive system, which can distribute power to the rear wheel with the most grip for improved traction on slippery surfaces.

GMC expects the Acadia’s optional 310-hp 3.6-liter V-6 ($1095 on SLE and SLT, standard on All Terrain and Denali trims) to be the volume engine, but the newfound lightness also allows a 2.5-liter four-cylinder to serve as the ute’s base powerplant for the first time. Both engines are backed by six-speed automatic transmissions and are available with all-wheel drive for $2000 extra; the V-6 also can tow up to 4000 pounds. The 3.6 rarely feels stressed moving the Acadia’s bulk, and its refined character better suits the GMC’s demeanor than the four. The 2.5-liter has to work harder and doesn’t sound as sweet doing it, yet it’s adequate for day-to-day city driving and should return close to 30 mpg on the highway in EPA testing. The V-6 models carry EPA city/highway ratings of 18/25 mpg—2 mpg better on both counts than those for the previous Acadia. Acceleration should also benefit from the weight loss, with V-6 examples likely hitting 60 mph in the high-six-second range and four-cylinder models closer to nine seconds. We’ll confirm those estimates as soon as we can affix our equipment to Acadias at the test track.
Smarter Package

Shoppers will have no trouble distinguishing the carryover Limited model from the 2017 edition. The new Acadia’s smaller size and new ovoid grille are obvious, while its proportions are actually closer to those of the smaller GMC Terrain, only much more handsome. GMC branding means lots of chrome adorns most models, while the darker-trimmed All Terrain offers a welcome alternative for those seeking to avoid the flash. The relatively low beltline opens up the Acadia’s greenhouse, and, aside from chunky D-pillars that obstruct the rear quarters, outward visibility is good. An available array of GM’s latest safety tech includes its Safety Alert Seat, a surround-view camera, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic collision mitigation.

Cargo volume behind the front row drops from 116 cubic feet to just 79, but clever packaging retains lots of usable space. The second- and third-row seats both fold flat with little fuss, and there are two underfloor storage bins for smaller items. Second-row captain’s chairs are available in place of the standard bench seat, and they both recline and slide for maximum versatility. A simple fold-and-slide mechanism on the passenger’s side allows surprisingly easy access to the third row, which, although tight, also reclines and will accommodate two actual adults; three six-footers can sit behind one another in reasonable comfort. Thoughtful amenities dot the cabin, including lots of storage cubbies, five USB ports, climate controls, and a 110-volt outlet for the second row. Because, sadly, forgetting to remove children from cars is a real thing, the new Acadia features an industry-first rear-seat reminder, which flashes and sounds a warning to check the back rows when the vehicle is shutting down. (It activates a warning only if the rear doors were opened within ten minutes of the vehicle being started. It can be turned off.)
Smarter Technology

The purposeful yet classy interior design incorporates numerous soft-touch points, the brushed-aluminum trim really is aluminum, and Denali models are dressed up with real-wood inserts. Electronic gadgetry includes a large configurable display in the instrument cluster of Denali models, as well as 7.0- or 8.0-inch center touchscreens for GMC’s IntelliLink interface. The latter includes standard OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with a Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces. Also new is GMC’s SHOP feature, which allows owners to download and sync GMC-approved apps both to the vehicle and to mobile devices.

Acadia pricing starts at $29,995 for the front-wheel-drive SL model, but you’ll have to spend at least $33,375 for the SLE to get the optional all-wheel drive. All versions come well equipped and get progressively more luxurious up to the $46,240 Denali, which includes the V-6, additional chrome pieces, specific six-spoke wheels, the aforementioned wood trim—and the potential to push the sticker beyond $50K with options. The subdued-looking All Terrain starts at $40,040 with standard all-wheel drive and V-6 power. Along with the upgraded drivetrain and darker trim, it also features its own wheel design and seat detailing. Importantly, the All Terrain is the only five-seat Acadia; its third row is replaced by a flat load surface with two additional underfloor storage bins.

While we expect the redesigned 2018 Chevrolet Traverse to offer a longer wheelbase and even more space than its Acadia sibling, the revised GMC appears to lose little if any capability in its shedding of mass. We look forward to our upcoming tests of the new Acadia, in which we’ll determine exactly how big a dividend this downsizing delivers.

New Attack Technique Hides Spread of RATs in Asia

SentinelOne last week announced that it has detected a technique being used in Asia to infect systems with remote access Trojans that ensures that the payload remains in memory throughout its execution and doesn't touch the victim's computer disk in an unencrypted state.

Attackers remain hidden from antivirus technologies and next-generation technologies that focus only on file-based threats, according to SentinelOne.

The samples analyzed also can detect the presence of a virtual machine, preventing them from being analyzed in a network sandbox.

Remote access Trojans, or RATs, aren't new but the technique is, said Joseph Landry, senior security researcher at SentinelOne.

"We expect to see an increase in fileless-based attacks that execute in memory to avoid detection," he told TechNewsWorld.

How It Works

The main binary is a packed .NET DLL bearing the name "Benchmark."

When run, it copies itself to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Blend\14.0\FeedCache\nvSCPAPISrv.exe and extracts a second binary named "PerfWatson.exe." It then executes both binaries from memory.

A registry key is created at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Load for persistence. That points to the PerfWatson.exe binary.

The RAT then tries to connect back to its control server, chickenkiller.com, which was down when SentinelOne checked. It apparently is owned by a free dynamic DNS service.
More About the Malware

The main executable in the Benchmark .NET DLL contains an XOR-encrypted .NET DLL in its .NET managed resources, as well as the logic to unpack and inject the RAT and monitor the PerfWatson.exe.

The settings for Benchmark and the NanoCore remote administration tool contained in the malware are serialized, DES encrypted, spliced and stored across multiple PNG files as pixel data, SentinelOne found. The PNG files are concatenated and stored in the main executable's .NET managed resources.

Once the encrypted DLL is decrypted, it's linked into the process using System.Reflection.Assembly.Load(byte[]). That ensures that the DLL will be retained in memory and not written to the filesystem.

The set options are then executed, and the NanoCore payload is injected into a new child process.
Detecting the RAT

SentinelOne detected the RAT because the dynamic behavior tracking engine in its platform "continuously looks for malicious behaviors all the way down to the user-space/kernel-space interface," Landry said.

Since communications between the payload being executed in memory and the kernel must be unencrypted, SentinelOne can detect execution at both process points -- when the Benchmark DLL is injected and when the RAT payload is injected, he noted.

Landry could not specify where in Asia the technique is being used.

Memory-only malware "is not a new threat," asserted Allison Nixon, director of security research at Flashpoint.

Detecting malware at the entry point of a network before it executes on a target machine "is easier to deal with from a remediation standpoint," she told TechNewsWorld.
Been There, Seen That

SentinelOne discusses two techniques -- decrypting an embedded resource and using .NET Reflection to dynamically load it, and injecting a PE file into a remote process -- neither of which is new, said Jason Geffner, principal security researcher at Crowdstrike.

"If you search Google for 'Assembly.Load malware,' you'll see almost 10,000 hits dating back to at least 2009," he told TechNewsWorld. Injecting a PE file into a remote process is "also a very old and extremely common technique, often referred to as process hollowing or dynamic forking."

Traditional antivirus engines and next-generation platforms "are designed to handle these specific techniques and have done [so] successfully for a very long time," Geffner said. Such platforms include Avast, BitDefender, Fortinet, Kaspersky, Panda and Trend Micro.

Behavior-based technology isn't the only way to detect the techniques SentinelOne discusses, he pointed out.

"Modern AV engines can efficiently emulate execution of malware using methods such as dynamic translation to detect both of these techniques without the user ever having to execute the malware," Geffner said. "These emulation techniques will typically not be hindered by the VM detection logic mentioned."

Clock Is Ticking for Free Windows 10 Upgrade

Microsoft last week announced that Windows 10 was running on 300 million PCs and reminded customers that its free upgrade offer would end July 29. After that date, the price to upgrade to Windows 10 Home will be US$119.

"We're pleased to see Windows 10 become one of the largest online services in less than a year," said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate VP of Microsoft's Windows and Devices Group.

Windows 10 services, including apps such as Photos, Groove Music, Movies & TV and Universal Windows Platform apps like Facebook and Instagram, are getting better and many more will be "coming in the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update this summer," he added.

To upgrade, consumers just need to accept Windows 10 when the pop-up window appears on their desktops.

On Track

Windows 10 "is moving much faster than any previous OS update," said Steve Kleynhans, a research VP atGartner. It's "proceeding pretty much as we expected, and by July 29 they should be somewhere just shy of 400 million devices."

Microsoft's goal was to have 1 billion Windows 10 users within two to three years of Windows 10's launch, and "I don't think they will have any trouble hitting the target based on the level of acceptance we are seeing so far," he told TechNewsWorld.

"The question isn't whether Microsoft will hit 1 billion, but whether it happens in three years or closer to two," Kleynhans said.

It's in the company's interest get users to upgrade.

"Microsoft obviously wants to reduce its operating costs, and supporting old operating systems is a high-cost obligation," pointed out Mike Jude, program manager at Stratecast/Frost & Sullivan.
Down to Business

The upgrade likely has been mainly on consumer PCs, as it "comes with a number of strings that may not be suitable for businesses," Kleynhans noted.

"Companies can't just roll out a new OS; it takes months to build expertise, do appropriate testing and engineer a new environment," he added. It may take a year or more to perform the updates once a business begins deployment.

"We're seeing the early phase of enterprise adoption, with 83 percent of our enterprise customers in active trials today," a Microsoft spokesperson said in comments provided to TechNewsWorld by company rep Lenette Larson. "There are positive early signals from customers with proof of concepts."

However, "people aren't exactly falling all over themselves to upgrade," Frost's Jude told TechNewsWorld.

"Upgrading to Windows 10 is a significant overhead many businesses don't want to take on right now," he said. "Couple that with the hypersensitivity of most businesses to possible security risks, and the risk associated with implementing an untried operating system may be unacceptable."

The consumer space is having its own issues, Jude noted. "Most consumers keep their machines much longer than business does, and many of the existing machines simply can't run Windows 10, mostly because of hardware limitations."
Who Should Upgrade and How

The free Windows 10 upgrade is available to "qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade by July 29," the Microsoft spokesperson told TechNewsWorld.

Consumers can check whether their device is compatible with Windows 10.

Before upgrading, users should back up everything, Jude cautioned. "Make sure you have a load disc for your previous operating system and all of the applications that you use. If Windows 10 crashes on install, and even if it doesn't, you want to be able to retreat to your last known good implementation."

He uses Windows 7, which is stable, he said. He has tried to upgrade to Windows 10 on three machines but has "had issues on each that prevented a clean load. I think it needs some work."

Businesses "ought to remain on Windows 7 at least until Windows 10's security profile is better understood," Jude suggested. "No one should stay with Windows 8 or 8.1."

iPhone 7 Rumors Blunt Anticipation

ManageEngine OpManager, a powerful NMS for monitoring your network, physical & virtual (VMware/ HyperV) servers & other IT devices. Deploy and start monitoring in less than an hour. Trusted by over a million admins world-wide. Try it for free.

It appears there won't be a lot of design changes in the next iPhone, according to a schematic photo NowhereElse published online Monday.

It shows what's purported to be Apple's upcoming iPhone 7 to be the same size as the 6s.

"They've done a lot with the design already. They're keeping multiple design languages to keep their customer base happy. The SE, for example, has the old design language, while the 6 and 6s have the new design language," said Kevin Krewell, an analyst with Tirias Research.

"That mix is something they'll do more of," he told TechNewsWorld. "With the 7, they'll try to push the envelope and try to get thinner."

Jack Backlash

One way to shed thickness would be removing the 3.5-millimeter jack for plugging headphones into the phone. However, any thinness gained would be slight, maintained Wayne Lam, a director and analyst at IHS.

"Removing the jack isn't going to buy them much," he told TechNewsWorld. "More than anything, they'd drop the jack to drop legacy connections and to make the phone waterproof."

Eliminating the 3.5-millimeter jack might be a sales tactic, according to Jack E. Gold, founder and principal analyst with J.Gold Associates.

"Apple is of different mindset than most of the people in the industry," he told TechNewsWorld. "That mindset is if we can change something and then sell you an accessory where the profit margins are high because of it, we're probably going to do that."

"They'll say they took the headphone jack out to make a thinner device, but in reality it's about selling a new set of accessories to users," he added.

While new features in an iPhone usually are designed to stoke enthusiasm in the market, removing the headphone jack could have the opposite effect.

"The removal of the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack will dampen the iPhone 7's reception from some quarters, particularly among audiophiles who like choice," said James Moar, a research analyst with Juniper Research.

"While an adapter will probably be available, this will probably not be enough," he told TechNewsWorld.
New Camera

Although little change was evident in the schematic photo NowhereElse posted, one noticeable change was the size of the rear camera on the iPhone 7. It is significantly bigger than in previous models and closer to the edge of the phone.

Imaging will be a primary focus of the iPhone 7, noted Lam of IHS. There will be two versions of the 7 Plus, one with a conventional camera and one with a dual camera array.

The features of the dual camera are still up in the air, he continued. The multiple lenses in the camera could be used for selective focusing or to reduce noise in low-light situations.

"Apple will likely do something unique in this case," he said.

It's also been suggested that storage on the highest-end iPhone might be bumped up to tablet levels -- a notion Moar discounted.

"Unless Apple has plans to increase the size of the iOS software as a whole, we do not consider the introduction of a 256-GB iPhone 7 to be likely," he said.
Smart Connector

For weeks, a rumor has circulated that the iPhone 7 would have a Smart Connector, like the iPad Pro. Both data and power can be transferred through the port, so adding it to the iPhone would open the door to a new category of accessories for the device, including wireless charging.

However, Mac Otakara last week threw cold water on that rumor.

Nevertheless, wireless charging in iPhone 7 is a real possibility, Moar said.

"We expect some degree of wireless charging in the iPhone 7, given Apple's experiment with it in the Watch and hiring of individuals with knowledge in this area," he noted.

What specification Apple will use for wireless charging -- its own specification or an existing one -- remains to be seen, Moar noted.

With Android's flagship phones supporting wireless charging, it's a disappointment the iPhone doesn't have it, he added.

As for the feature enticing upgrades from Apple users or Android deserters, "it won't drive sales on its own," Moar observed.
Home Run

Given Apple's most recent disappointing earnings report, "a lot of people are putting stock on the need for Apple to hit a home run with the iPhone 7," said Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at Technalysis Research.

"But there's almost nothing they can do that's going to dramatically change things for them, and I think there's too much pressure on the iPhone 7 and that's going to create even more of a challenge for them," he told TechNewsWorld.

Apple sales volumes don't have to beat those of its competitors for it to be a winning company. "They're focused on making their ecosystem sticky and winning over Android users," Lam said.

"That's their overall strategy," he added. "It's not how many iPhones they sell. It's how good their ecosystem is and how good their user experience is so people want to stay there."
