Militants sack Lagos Estate, shoot three policemen (Details)

There was chaos on Tuesday at Pacific Estate, Ikejiobi Avenue, Ewedogbon, in the Igando area of Lagos after some militants engaged security operatives in a gun battle for about seven hours.

During the encounter, three policemen attached to Igando Police Division and two residents, who're identified as Baba Victor and Adedokun, were injured.

It was gathered that the gunmen, who were suspected to be militants, had invaded the community at 6am through the waterways behind the estate. They were said to have looted shops in the estate.

It was learnt that when the matter was reported at the Igando division, a police team was deployed in the area around.

The policemen engaged the bandits in a gun battle, during which three policemen were shot.

Although one of the policemen was shot in the head, the police said he survived the attack and was receiving treatment in a government hospital.

During the gun battle, some residents were said to have regained their freedom from the militants, who had earlier abducted them.

When Punch got to the estate around 9am, four streets – Ojo Benjamin, Kehinde Ashafa, Ganiyu Adekunle and Ikejiobi – had been deserted.

A landlord in the area, who identified himself only as Olayinka, said there were women among the militants, who also looted shops and escaped with foodstuffs.

He said, “The attacks started in Fatoki community, Igando, on Saturday. We did not know it was our turn this morning (Tuesday). At about 6.30am, they came into the estate, shooting and moving around the streets.

“Everyone ran inside and bolted the doors. They caught a resident, Baba Victor, on his motorcycle, and took him away. They cut him with machetes, but he escaped during the gun battle with the police.

“They smashed the vehicles they found on the streets. They broke into shops and stole frozen foods, bags of rice and garri. They were about 15 men. The hoodlums did not cover their faces and there were women among them. Some of us were watching them from our houses.”

While Punch was talking with the landlord, gunfire exchange between the operatives and hoodlums sent everyone scurrying to safety again.

Some residents – women and children – were observed leaving the area at about 2pm. Soldiers on the streets searched their luggage as they filed out in groups.

One of the women said, “I was sweeping the corridor of my house around 6.30am when people suddenly started running, saying some hoodlums were coming with guns. Immediately I bolted my door, the gunshots started. From the keyhole, I saw four of the men. A boy of about 20 years was in the front. He wore a red cap with coconut in his hand and a charm on his chest. The three others had guns and shot into the air sporadically.”

Thirteen police vans, two Rapid Response Squad armoured tanks and three OP MESA vans were sighted at the bus stop with displaced residents numbering over 200 people.

A policeman, who had gone to the waterside, said the gunmen arrived at the riverside around 6am, adding that they could have collaborators in the estate.

He said, “The attackers are Ijaw youths. They are young, slim and can easily swim away in water. They shot at us and three policemen were injured. They saw us and laid an ambush. When we got to a section of the river, they began to shoot. We replied the bullets. But three policemen were hit and injured.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the police had yet to make any arrest, but normalcy had been restored to the area.

She said, “Some group of people invaded the area in the early hours of Tuesday. Operatives were alerted and moved in to foil the attack. Normalcy has been restored in the vicinity. No policeman died in the incident. The command is still on the trail of the suspects.”

The Uniqueness of T.B. Joshua

by John Kamunyanje
Love him or hate him, he is a public figure that cannot be ignored. Nigerians have become notorious for trickery and bribery the world over. This is so wide spread that in some places just possessing a Nigerian passport draws the trail of the police.

In almost every country there are crooks and honest people, Nigeria is no exception. The good news is that all is not rotten, in the basket of rottenness.

But what is it that makes T. B. Joshua unique?

By the way, I am neither his fan nor his foe. Below find things that TB Joshua does, which other men of God don't.

These are the things that make him a darling of the people despite the negative publicity campaign by his fellow church men and the media.

1. His charity work
He is not the richest when compared to the other Nigerian pastors who are reputedly super rich. One has five personal jets. Just one similar jet stirred controversy in Malawi when our president bought it, but a certain Nigerian pastor has five of them.

Some own big hotels, printing presses, limousines, and big companies. The irony is, you hardly hear of them giving to the poor, the widows, the lame and the blind.

TB Joshua gives liberally, giving out even cars while some are stockpiling them in their compounds.

He gives scholarships and his ministry has helped educate many people up to university level.

2. His humility
He is a down to earth person. He mingles with people, breaks down his English so people can understand while mending marriages and hearts of people.

He is seen having lunch with old people, the lame and what have you. He is seen comforting people and many times he has been heard telling childless parents that he will be their child.

He jokes freely with all while most of the men of God we know, believe in being serious, and by that I mean living a separated life and mingling with nobody.

3. His father heart
He is the only one I know, and I stand to be corrected, who has identified and recruited people, and is training them in his own church.

He is exposing them and even allows them to appear on the television alongside him. Sometimes he even goes backstage while they take charge of the services.

Show me other ministers or leader who has done that. Many others make sure that the television is off limit for any budding or aspiring preacher.

If you find them grooming someone, then, be sure, he is one of their kin and folk, otherwise, no way!

Some feel so insecure that they rush home leaving meetings so that nobody preaches apart from them.

4. He is no globe trotter
Seems like this man knows his mission field. He rarely goes out of his country. He has the courage to send some of his boys to the United States of America to do ministry.

This is a direct opposite of what the ministers we know are doing. T B man is never excited with foreign trips which others would quickly take up at the expense of their local flock.
He is different. People find him where he is based. People from European countries have to swallow their pride and go to Nigeria if they want him. What a contrast to most preachers we know.

I have deliberately left out issues to do with the way he ministers. Not all people agree on that, that's why others brand him "controversial".

These issues are more theological than otherwise and as you know, the pew man is not conversant with theological issues. He is a bench warmer and a layman sitting at the back of some church.

Any APC man confirmed to be corrupt will face trial – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he will not hesitate to prosecute party loyalists and those who supported his Presidency bid in the 2015 presidential election, if involved in corrupt practices.

Buhari, in an interview he granted The Interview magazie, while faulting claims he had been sparing those who sponsored his campaigns and members of his party in his ongoing anti-corruption war, said he would come down hard on any of his backers that cases of corruption could be established against.

The President said:

“Do you just grab people along the road and take them off to court for trial just because you want to create a semblance of balance? First, there has to be an accusation which must be properly investigated, and when a prima facie case has been built, you prosecute.

“If any of my backers or party (APC) members has anything established against them, let’s see whether I will shield anyone from prosecution.

“There seems to be a preponderance of the People Democratic Party members standing trial because they had been in power for 16 years, they had access to the public treasury and abused the trust reposed in them.

“You can be assured that anybody caught in corruption will answer for it irrespective of party, tribe or religion.”

Father Mbaka Opens Up On Jonathan, Buhari, Other Issues

Outspoken Enugu Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has said he had no regret over his prophesy of change made in 2015, where he had predicted that former President Goodluck Jonathan would be defeated in the last general elections.

He dismissed claims that he fell apart with Jonathan over the latter’s refusal to grant his request for oil well as “lies from the pit of hell.”

Father Mbaka, who spoke through his media aide, Maximus Ike Ugwuoke, ahead of his 21st priestly ordination anniversary, said he would not regret the change prophesy despite the current sufferings Nigerians are experiencing.

He recalled that on several occasions, he had prophesied on the hard times bedeviling the nation.

The priest maintained that the previous administration, which he alleged ran a wasteful government, should be held responsible for the present situation.

“When these prophecies come, it must not be what people think or want; people are entitled to their views. Those reactions mean nothing; the important thing is that there is nothing he had prophesied which never came to pass; the ministry does not care how people feel about his prophecies. Some call him controversial priest; some call him fiery priest and all so on, they are entitled to their opinion. The fact remains that he is a true prophet.

“I will tell you something, it is not for us to judge prophesies. He was the only person who said Buhari would win. If it were in the olden days, all the so-called men of God who castigated him would have received the wrath of God immediately. All of them should be ashamed of themselves now.

“When you look at that prophesy on Jonathan, he gave it and it came to pass. Don’t forget that two months before that prophesy, Jonathan’s wife came to the adoration ground. If, after such visit, he had the courage to reveal such prophesy against them, that tells you that it is much more than what people think. Whether the prophesy was a good one or not, talking about the suffering has nothing to do with it.

“Before Buhari took over, the dollar was rising, there was already problem with our economy. They had oil boom, but never saved; they just wasted the opportunity. Even the suffering we are talking about was part of his prophesies. I recall that on the January 1 this year, he said clearly that Nigerians should brace up for hard times. He said a lot of hardship was under way; this suffering Nigerians are passing through is a process of change. I’m seeing a great future for Nigerians; he made it clear that there were so many holes which needed to be filled.”

When asked whether Mbaka could then be described as a prophet of doom, he said:

“No way; he is not a prophet of doom; you can’t say that this is a government of doom; this is a government that has unearthed a whole lot of things; the other government had oil boom, which they squandered, they handed over oil doom to this government; we are no longer talking of excess crude; this is what the present government is facing.”

Businessman & Ex-Wife in Court over Son’s "Disappearance"

The whereabouts of a young boy has become an issue between a businessman, Victor Asiegbu, and his ex-wife Blessyn, as they point accusing fingers at each other over the disappearance of their son.

Asiegbu told a magistrate’s court in Ogba, Lagos, how his ex-wife Ngozi Blessyn, allegedly went to his son’s school, claiming she was taking him for a medical check up and disappeared with him.

Testifying before Magistrate (Mrs) O. J. Awope of an Ogba Magistrate’s Court in a bid to unravel the whereabouts of the boy, Mr. Aisegbu said that Ngozi Blessyn, his ex-wife, lied about the whereabouts of his son, just as he pleaded with the court to assist in locating his son.

The estranged wife, in turn, accused the husband of being the brain behind the sudden disappearance of their boy, claiming that the father had custody of the boy.

Blessyn is specifically answering questions to a count charge of lying under oath, preferred against her by the police.

Defendant’s mother fingers complainant
While being led in evidence by the prosecutor, Inspector Ayorinde Ezekiel, the businessman notified the court that “I went to the police station to make a report alongside with the head teacher, Mr Osuji.

“We were assigned two officers, who accompanied us to Blessyn’s (defendant) house where she is supposed to be residing with the mother.

“On getting to the house, we met her mother, who claimed she had not seen her daughter for some time and that the last she saw of my son was the day his school bus came to convey him to school.

“She said she noticed two men on a bike trailing the bus and that one of them had a cap on so she could not see the face properly, but that from the stature of the person, it looked like me and the second person was my friend that came with me, the police and the head teacher to her house.

“In fact, my friend was enraged and challenged her for telling such a lie. After the interrogation, the police picked her up to the station where she was told to inform her daughter to come to the station.”

Victor Asiegbu told the court that the officers advised they should come the following Monday, but that Blessyn came with her lawyer the next day, a Friday.

He said: “Unfortunately, I travelled to Benin and only got a call from the IPO whom I told I won’t be available. On Monday, I was at the station but was told her lawyer came and told them the matter was in court. Nothing happened afterwards.”

According to Vanguard, Asiegbu also said in September, he got a summons from the court where he was served with a contempt proceeding where the wife swore to an oath on September 2, 2014 that she hasn’t seen the boy since June 17.

Found
He said: “However, she had gone to the school on July 15 to pick him up with a false claim of taking him for a medical check-up. Thus denying knowledge of his whereabouts and that the court should help her find her son whom she claimed was with me. It was at this point I felt the boy may be missing if she could swear to an oath.

“About two weeks after, a friend called me to say he saw the defendant (Blessyn) with my son at a function at Idimu and was wondering if I now reside in that area. It was at this point I went to write a petition and reported my case at the Idimu station.

“An officer at Idimu carried out the investigation that led to my son being found in the custody of Mr. Humphrey Isidore, the husband of Mrs Joy Isdore (nee Ejeogo), Ngozi’s immediate elder sister.”

The ex-wife is now in trouble. The magistrate adjourned the matter till October 21 for full trial.

Commanding Officer, 17 Others Missing as Boko Haram Takes Nigerian Troops Unawares

The Nigerian Army says three officers and 15 soldiers are missing in action following the showdown with Boko Haram insurgents in northern Borno State.

Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, disclosed this on Friday to journalists in Maiduguri, the state capital.

He said that a search party deployed to the area has already established contact with six soldiers and four members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).

Commanding Officer of the Operation is among those still missing in action, as well as unspecified number of members of the civilian JTF.

According to the Commander, the soldiers disappeared after engaging the bandits in what appears to be a reinforcement mission for their dislodged collaborators in a town called “Gongon”.

Boko Haram Ambush
The Army had earlier said that a number of its troops were missing after they ran into an ambush by the dreaded terrorists. The Army explained that the attack occurred while the troops were returning to their defensive locations after operations to clear remnants of the insurgents at Gongon and environs.

The operation led to destruction of the terrorists’ makeshift camps and recovery of various weapons including an anti-aircraft gun, an armored personnel carrier, and motorcycles used by the terrorists.

End Time: Curvaceous Woman Pictured Walking N*ked in Ikeja, Lagos (Photo)

This weird report is currently being circulated on social media Nigerians insinuating the woman could have been mentally-deranged.

Residents around the Opebi road in Lagos were stunned with the sight of a curvy woman whose face wasn't pictured on camera walking gallantly n*ked.

This looks really strange and mysterious to be true but not according to a broadcast sent on the BlackBerry Messenger by one Shoye Benson and some other BBM users with the unclad photo displayed.

Read the broadcast below:

"I was my colleagues's car along Opebi road last night going home from work when i sighted this curvaceous woman (see my DP) who caused a little traffic as she walked unclad in public. The funny thing is that she was walking proudly like a model and Instead of coming to her rescue, some of the passersby started photographing her but she seemed less concerned with the attention she was creating along the busy road.

She eventually turned towards a building, i think it was an hotel or club. It’s not clear whether the woman had gone berserk or what really forced her to walk unclad in public. My concern is this, we need to be more prayerful in this era. A lot of strange things are happening as i headed home last, night the question that kept popping up in my head is, what could have made such a beautiful lady go expose her womanly pride in such a public? May we never be victims of circumstances. Amen! "

8TH SENATE: Bridging the Gap Between the Able & Disabled Nigerians

by Saka Olawale

Over 19 million Nigerians live with one form of disabilities or the other, with more than 80% of them living in the rural areas of the country. In every region of the world, in every country, persons with disabilities often live on the margins of society, deprived of some of life’s fundamental experiences.

Persons with disabilities have little hope of going of getting education, securing a job, having their own home, creating a family and raising children, socializing or even exercising their civic rights during elections. Persons with disabilities make up the world’s most disadvantaged minority.

From time immemorial, there’s been a huge discrimination against people with special needs; there is an extent to which the generality of the society wants to relate with disabled men and women. The domino effect of this marginalisation is an increased rate in street begging, this has become an occupation as some people with disabilities have decided to venture into begging full time as a means of livelihood, its saddening that these men and women roam the streets begging for food, money, etc.

For effective and efficient governance on the entire citizenry, the government must ensure that Nigerians (able and disabled) receive their civil rights as enshrined in the constitution, to feel a sense of belonging and enjoy in the dividends of democracy just like an ordinary citizen.

There should be An Act to Ensure Full Integration of Persons with Disabilities into the Society and also to establish a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities which should be vested with the Responsibilities for their Education, Health, the Protection of their Social, Economic, Civil Rights.

It is worthy of note that the bill (Persons with disability bill) which contains vital provisions for the integration of Persons with Disability failed to get signed into law during the 6th and 7th Assembly

For purposes of elucidation, here are some of the striking provisions of the bill. Part one, provides for Prohibition of Discrimination and Harmful Treatment. Any offender in this section is liable to N1m for corporate organizations or N100, 000 for individuals and 6 months imprisonment or both.

Part two talks about the accessibility of Physical Structures. It made it mandatory for public buildings, roads, walk-ways and others to be constructed in such a way that a Persons With Disability accesses them like every other person without a hindrance or difficulty. Offenders here are punishable with a fine or imprisonment or both.

The bill also give the right of first refusal in queues and emergencies to PWD’s and condemn the act of using a person with disability for begging. Interestingly, the bill says Persons With Disability’s should be encouraged to participate in politics and public life.

In addition, the proposed law provides for the establishment of a Commission. Section 33 (1) says: “There is established a body to be known as the National Commission for persons with disability (in this Bill referred to as “the Commission”) to be placed under the Presidency. It stipulates that there shall be a board which shall conduct the affairs of the Commission.

One of the many great points scored by the 8th Senate under the leadership of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki was the signage of the Persons With Disability bill into law, if this bill is assented to by the President, it will radically transform citizens living with disabilities in Nigeria and this will eventually lead to equal participation of people living disabilities in public life

BREAKING | Nigeria's Economy Falls Into Recession

Information reaching PredonBc.Com indicates that the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, told the Senate in session this afternoon that Nigeria's struggling economy is finally in recession.

When asked if we are in recession, Mrs Adeosun said; "Technically, Yes." She also confirmed in clear terms that there is no more subsidies. With this reality, what is the way out?

These are indeed troubling times for many families. Inflation figures are scary. The cost of goods and servicing are increasing on a daily basis. The value of the Naira is not encouraging, especially at the notorious black market which operates with virtually no control.

I hope the government will be able to fashion out a realistic way forward in the shortest possible time.
