Brilliant Chiedozie Ibekwe wins the 2016 7Up Harvard Business School Scholarship (Photos)

Chiedozie Ibekwe has emerged the winner of the 2016 edition of the 7Up Harvard Business School MBA Scholarship. Ibekwe, an electrical engineer, is the 6th recipient of the prestigious award, and an alumnus of King’s College Lagos, UNILAG, and the University of Mississippi, USA, respectively.

He joins past winners such as Misan Rewane (2011), Olujimi Williams (2012), Mayowa Kuyoro (2013), Shola Olaniyan (2014), and Bankole Rasheed Makanju (2015), who have benefited from the initiative since its inception in 2010.

Every Nigerian should be proud of this great stride. Last Saturday at Howard University in Washington D.C., out of the 96 graduating Doctor of Pharmacy candidates, 43 of them were Nigerians.

Not only that, 27 awards were presented, and 16 went to Nigerians.

U.S. President Barack Obama delivered the keynote address at the event. Howard University has the only dental and pharmacy colleges in the District of Columbia. The graduates represented 46 states and 35 countries. The youngest graduate at the ceremony was 20yrs old.


Nigerians have what it takes to rule the world. We shall get there!

AAU Ekpoma Matriculates New Part-Time Students

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, AAU matriculates new part-time students for the 2015/2016 academic session. VC implores all new students to be well behaved, respectful and that they owe it a duty to protect the facilities in the School and not to destroy what has already been built.

The Directorate of Part-Time Degree Programmes held its 10th Matriculation ceremony on Wednesday, 10th June, 2016 in the 500 Capacity New Lecture Theatre at Emaudo Annex.

The Matriculation ceremony was held to formally admit the 2015/2016 session fresh students into the University.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.A. Onimawo in his address welcomed and congratulated all the matriculating students and their parents for being fortunate to be admitted. He intimated that the University was established by the founding fathers to create opportunities for all those having the potentialities for higher education but could not be admitted due to limited spaces in the existing Universities at that time. Adding that, in the same vein, this University, in furtherance to the philosophy for its establishment, noted that even those qualified and with the potentialities could not be accommodated in view of the quota from NUC/JAMB, hence the establishment of this programme in order to enable very many students come in for the upliftment of their educational knowledge.

He further enjoined them to be well behaved, respectful and that they owe it a duty to protect the facilities in the School and not to destroy what has already been built. He urged them to always employ dialogue rather than violence and utilized the appropriate channels to make their demands. The Vice-Chancellor equally noted that having been formally admitted into this University, they are in a process of making new relationships with persons from diverse socio-cultural and religious backgrounds, since their academic horizon was certainly getting wider, they ware in the process of learning and becoming acquainted with the new authors, concepts and principles in their respective disciplines, therefore it was another gestation period for them.

He further admonished them to be good and worthy ambassadors of the University and at the end of their academic periods in the University; they would proudly receive their certificates because they have been found worthy both in character and in learning.

The high point of the occasion was the formal presentation of the Matriculants to the Vice-Chancellor by the Director, the Directorate of Part-Time Degree Programmes, Prof. Theophilus Agweda and the administration of the Matriculation Oath on the students by the Registrar, Sir Chris Adamaigbo.

The ceremony was witnessed by other Principals Officers of the University and Lecturers as well as other staff of the University.

Ambrose Alli University, AAU post UTME and Direct Entry application forms for the 2016/2017 academic session are out. AAU post UTME minimum cut-off mark is 180. Both UTME and Direct Entry candidates must register and participate in the screening exercise in order to be considered for admission.

UNILAG students who drowned in Elegushi buried amid tears

Tears flowed freely on Friday at the Ikoyi Cemetary, Lagos, as the remains of Adesola Ogunmefun and Olufunmilayo Odusina, two University of Lagos post-graduate students who drowned and died during one of their friend’s birthday party at Elegushi beachi on June 6, 2016, were finally laid to rest.

Pastor Biodun Alimi, the officiating minister during the funeral programme speaking to the mouners said "But we do not want you to be uninformed brothers about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. Therefore, mourn not, cry not, grieve not; but rather give thanks to God for the life lived."
Despite the advice from the man of God, family members and friends of the two young women could not hold back their tears, as they wept bitterly while paying their last respect.

Sunmibola Ogunmefun, a sibling to the late Adesola, said even though the family is in mourning, they are consoled by the good life she lived and impact she made during her sojourn on earth.

“Very simplistic, you’ve never been the kind to take things too seriously and your smile is from ear to ear. Keeping malice with you was futile, you’d always find a way to break the ice…never one to hold grudge.

“Sola, in your short years on earth, you’ve connected us with so many people and your death has brought reconciliation…you are indeed a special one,” she said while paying homage to her late sister.

UNIBEN lecturers block student’s graduation for 3 years, say ‘too busy’ to compile records

A University of Benin student has been denied graduation for three years despite meeting all academic requirements, and his lecturers and examination officials say they have been too busy to compile his records.

Temidayo Awoyemi, 26, had eagerly hoped to fulfill his dreams after graduation from the school’s department of chemistry. He now has spent three years now after completing his studies, without graduation.

Officials in his department and faculty say they have had no time to process his records for the last two years.

The faculty checker, Professor Anthony Imiavan, in charge of scrutinizing students’ records, confirmed to Premium Times that the student had no case to keep him from graduating.

A spokesperson for the school told this newspaper the case was “strange”, and assured it would be resolved quickly.

Despite that assurance, the school has yet to act on the matter more than a month after.

Temidayo’s problem began in his final year when his department said his West African Senior Secondary School Certificate was not in its records. At least five other students in his class had the same problem.

After losing the 2012/13 school session to a six-month strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, Temidayo hoped he would be quickly let go the next session once he provided a copy of the missing certificate.

He submitted the certificate to the chemistry department and began to wait for clearance since 2013/2014 session. Two years after, he is still waiting for the school to process his result for graduation.

The process of clearing him requires the approval of his course adviser, Wayne Omagamre, faculty checker, Professor Anthony Imiavan; the Head of Department, Professor James Okuo; and Dean, Professor Sunday Omosigho.

Teen allergic to Wi-Fi commits suicide

       

The mother of a teen who committed suicide after suffering from what she calls a rare allergy to Wi-Fi is accusing her daughter’s school of failing to protect her.

Jenny Fry, 15, was found hanging from a tree near her home in the U.K. last June. Her story is now coming to light because of a legal investigation into the cause of Jenny’s death.

Her mother, Debra Fry, told the Mirror that Jenny suffered from blinding headaches, fatigue, concentration problems, and bladder issues that she says were caused by electro-hypersensitivity syndrome (EHS), a condition in which electromagnetic radiation emitted from wireless technology, including Wi-Fi, cellphones, and cell towers, causes debilitating physical symptoms.

Although Jenny’s parents had removed Wi-Fi from their home, which helped, it was still present at her school.

“Both Jenny and I were fine at home, but Jenny continued to be ill at school in certain areas,” said Fry.

Jenny received several detentions in school, not for being disruptive in class, but because she’d often have to leave the classroom to find an area away from Wi-Fi where she could concentrate. 
Fry had shared information about Wi-Fi’s potential problems with the head teacher of Jenny’s school, Simon Duffy, but according to Fry, Duffy told her there was an equal amount of information that shows Wi-Fi is harmless.

“I also had a heated exchange with teachers telling them Jenny was allergic to Wi-Fi, and that it made no sense making her take detentions in rooms that were making her ill,” said Fry. “The least they could do was allow her to take them in rooms where she felt able to concentrate, but they wouldn’t listen.”

Fry believes Jenny’s suicide attempt was meant to be a cry for help. A police statement said that on the day Jenny died, she had texted a friend twice, telling the friend about her intentions to commit suicide and stating where she was, according to the Mirror. But her friend didn’t have her phone with her to see the texts in time.

“Jenny left letters for us where she said she couldn’t cope with her allergies from Wi-Fi anymore,” Fry told the Telegraph. “She left them for us in case things went too far, but I don’t believe she wanted to die.”

UNN students cry out over 'mandatory' N70,000 laptop fee

Recently, the university administration in it's bid to industrialize the school with information technology introduced a mandatory policy, where all students must own a laptop and pay N70,000 as laptop fee. But many students are unhappy that such levies have been imposed on them.

Students said that this new policy is making education so difficult for the poor, as with this policy, many students would now be paying close to N200,000 in a federal university per session.

The students are calling the new Education Minister to call the vice chancellor to order..that laptop ownership should be a choice and not mandatory!

Horror! 21Year-old Man Stabs Landlord To Death In Lagos (Photo)

Some hoodlums started a street fight on Olorogun Street, Odo Eran, in the Itire area of Lagos State on Tuesday, during which a 21-year-old stabbed a landlord, identified as Alawu Lateef, to death.
Lateef, who was a father of three, had intervened in the fight, and asked the hoodlums to leave the area, when one of them, identified as Lati Elepo, stabbed the landlord.

It was gathered that the father of three slumped, while residents arrested Elepo before he could escape with the other hoodlums. The matter was said to have been reported at the Itire Police Division.
The hoodlums, numbering six boys, had come from Osindero Street to meet one Balogun, who they claimed owed them about N30,000.
It was learnt that when the hoodlums did not meet Balogun at home, they started to make trouble on the street.
The landlord, Lateef, who worked as a panel beater, was said to have asked Elepo to leave the area with his gang members. The hoodlum, however, stabbed him in the chest.
Friends and family members rushed the landlord to a private hospital in the area, from where he was referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, where he was confirmed dead.
His corpse was afterwards brought to the Itire division.
One of his neighbours, who identified himself simply as Rashidi, said Lateef did not have any business with the miscreants, but only tried to pacify them when Elepo stabbed him on the chest.
Rashidi added that Elepo and two other suspects were arrested by the police.
He said,

“It was at about 11am when these boys from Osindero stormed our street. They are teenagers. They are not cultists. They said Balogun owed them N30,000 which they must collect from him.

“Lateef did not want such commotion on the street. So, he came out to caution them to take things calmly. The one who stabbed him was drunk.
“While Lateef spoke with them, the suspect went to a shop of an artisan who sharpens knives and other metals, grabbed about three knives and stabbed Lateef on the chest. Resident arrested him and dragged him to the police station while other hoodlums ran away.”

24 Year Woman Missing And Presumed Dead For 10 Years Found ‘Living In Internet Cafe’

A woman who vanished 10 years ago and was presumed dead has reportedly been found living in an internet cafe.

Missing for a decade, it’s alleged she has been living and playing games in the cafes since 2005.

Xiao Yun, who is now aged 24, left her home in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang and has not been seen since.

But she was finally found by police officers on Nov 20 after a routine check on an internet cafe, reports The Strait Times.

The woman, who was carrying a fake ID card, was taken to a local police station where she revealed that she had been living in internet cafes for the past decade.

She is said to be a particular fan of the multiplayer first-person shooter game CrossFire , and relied on handouts and occasional cashier shifts at cafes.

The police fined her £5,000 and contacted her parents so they could be reunited. Her mother told the Qianjiang Evening News she had not changed her phone number since her daughter left home.

“I have a stubborn personality and a short temper, so I used to scold her. But it’s been 10 years and now she’s an adult. I will never scold her again,” she said.

This Nigerian Man Received Recognition In The US For Saving 30 Students From Fire Tragedy (Photos)

The board of Spring Branch Independent School District, Houston, on Monday honored US based Nigerian Samuel Agunbiade for keeping 30 students safe on Friday when their bus caught fire.

Agunbiade said he heard a loud pop and saw smoke coming from the bus’s tailpipe. He immediately pulled off and within a few minutes the bus caught fire but he got all the students off the bus unharmed. Video taken by a witness shows the terrifying moment when the bus exploded.

While reacting to the honor, Agunbiade who has been a bus driver for 21 years, said: “They’re calling me a hero. I said hero? I just did what I was supposed to do. You guys are mine. I’m supposed to take care of you.”

50 Nigerians Bag First-class from Malaysian University

Out of the 253 Nigerians who graduated in various academic disciplines at the 2015 convocation ceremony of the Linton University College, Malaysia, 50 made first class honours, the Petroleum Technology Development Fund has said.

According to the Fund, 35 PTDF scholars were among the 253 Nigerians who graduated at the 2015 convocation ceremony which was done in collaboration with the University of East London and Coventry University, United Kingdom.

The Fund, in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday said, “Altogether 50 Nigerian graduates distinguished themselves with first class honours, among whom were 13 PTDF scholars who earned first class degrees in Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Business Management and Civil Engineering.”

The Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria to Malaysia, Mrs. Janet Odeka, according to the statement, said the unprecedented achievement of the Nigerian scholars in the university in Malaysia had contributed in creating a positive image for Nigerians living in the country.

She said, “I am really excited and grateful because this is the first time we are having such number of graduates who produced good results such as first class and second class upper. We have had students from Nigeria who were involved in criminal activities and other immoral acts, but for the first time, we are celebrating something we should be proud of as Nigerians and I wish to appeal to Nigerians here that they should emulate what these graduands have done to attract a good name for Nigeria.”

The Executive Secretary, PTDF, Mr. Femi Ajayi, urged the graduands to take advantage of the opportunities opening up in Nigeria under a new administration to deploy their new skills and knowledge.

He said, “Rather than being skeptical about the future and apprehensive about job opportunities back home in Nigeria, you should be excited, knowing that a new chapter has opened that provides the enabling environment for those who genuinely wish to make it in Nigeria.”

Ajayi said their areas of specialisation which are engineering-related would serve as stepping stones for building the bridges between opportunities and dreams.

He said, “This is something to be very proud of and excited about, particularly when you know the areas they specialise in. We have high hopes on them. If you have people who have excelled, the thing to do is to deploy their knowledge in the right direction. Some will proceed for their masters and PhDs and for those who want to work, we will link them up with available job opportunities in Nigeria.

“With the kind of knowledge and experience they have here, I am hopeful that their skills and knowledge will be readily utilised in Nigeria and I will encourage them to go back home.”

Fayose vs Presidency - my support

Me I support Fayose for this one o. The man has a right to say his mind no matter how ludicrous it is. It remains for the Presidency or whoever his diatribe is directed at to choose to either ignore him or take the opportunity to correct whatever fallacies he may have spewed out. To me Fayose is the only credible opposition. He is in his own usual manner becoming the voice of the people. You may not like his politics or his Amala dress sense but his courage and consistency is what I admire. So warning him shows a lack of capacity to match up with him fact for fact. This is not time for warning, ‘my people of change,’ this is time for action, for purpose driven leadership and for openness in government. We are all in this together. The economy is crumbling, do something!!!!!!! 

Lagos Fashion Show and the homosexuals

My people I am still in shock o. What my eye saw at the Federal Palace Hotel venue of this fashion show has scarred me for life. It looks like the law against homosexuality is not working. All the gay people in Nigeria came out in full force. I swear those of us that we’re straight were not up to five inside that hall that sat over 1000 people. Kai, come and see people’s children. I wept, I really wept. The guys were in skirts, lipstick, blouse, holding each other and walking around with no care. What pained me was the way they were looking down on us that we’re straight. As I made to sit on an empty seat, one of these masquerades after looking me up and down shifted his or is it her seat so as not to touch me.

Who want to touch IT sef. It’s only Sharia that can solve this problem o. We need sharia law for this one. The sharia police must come into Lagos otherwise our children will be totally infected. The children in their youth have all been infected, the way I was staring I almost got myself beaten. The last time I saw men kissing was in the UK, I saw it at Federal Palace that day o. Kai, I screamed calabar scream and closed my eyes and ran away to my car . This one is not only Government problem, where are the Pastors, leave your Private Jets and come and really work here. BVN registration to the rescue

3 shot dead, 5 injured as rival cults clash in Abakaliki

NO fewer than three persons were last week shot dead, while five others sustained gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies as rival cult groups clashed in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Those killed in the clash include 35-year-old-man and beer palour owner, Amaechi Ude an indigene of Enugu State but resident in Abakaliki where he was doing his business.

Others are Sunday Onwe of Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and a staff of Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, whose name could not be immediately ascertained.

Ude was killed in his beer palour at Isiuke lane, off Norom Street, Abakalik, while Onwe was shot at a drinking joint, identified as yori yori, located close to Ebonyi State School of Health Technology in Ngbo court.

Third victim shot thrice

The third victim was shot three times in the head at the Abakaliki Township Stadium where he had gone to play football.

The incidents happened simultaneously in different locations in the state.

Ude was sitting in his bar around 7:pm when two unidentified gunmen who operated on a motor bike shot him.

The incident forced customers to flee, while the victim was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Onwe, on the other hand, was at a birthday party with his friends at the yori yori joint when hoodlums invaded the area and shot him in the chest and he gave up the ghost instantly.

Chairman of Ohaukwu local government area, Barr. Clement Odaah, who confirmed the killing of Onwe, the younger brother of Ngbo Central Development Centre Coordinator, Ofobuike Onwe, said he had reported the matter to the police.

“The police is already investigating the matter and some persons have been arrested in connection with the killing.

“More persons will be arrested and I am assuring the people that all the perpetrators will be brought to book,” he said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP George Okafor, also confirmed the killing of Amechi Ude.

He said when the command got a distress call from Ude’s family over the incident, policemen were sent to the scene, adding that before they got there, the hoodlums had already fled.

He said efforts were on to arrest Ude’s killers.

The injured

Meanwhile, five young men, including one Nwatu Ikenna and Chukwuebuka Mbam ,were shot in different parts of their bodies.

Narrating his ordeal, one of the victims, Ikenna said he was going to his shop when he saw young men on mask who opened fire on him and shot him at the back.

He said a five-year-old boy whose mother sold beans cake near the scene, was hit by stray bullets.

The remains of the dead victims have been deposited in different mortuaries, while those wounded are currently receiving treatment in different hospitals in the state.
