PDP Senators Get Juicy Committees, Saraki Settles His Men

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki, disclosed the names of chairmen and vice chairmen of 65 of the standing committees of the Senate on Wednesday.

A breakdown of the list according to geopolitical zones shows that the North-Central got the highest number of committees (12), North-East, North-West and South-West got 11 each, while the South-East and South-South got 10 each.
Though senators belonging to the ruling APC, who are in majority in the chamber, are to head 41 committees, the top committees, including Aviation, Power, Finance, Petroleum Downstream and Niger Delta, are to be headed by members of the opposition PDP, plus 19 other committees.

The number of committees, 65, is an increment from the 57 in the last assembly.

Senator Ahmad Lawan’s supporters, members of the Senate Unity Group, were made chairmen of committees on Defence, Police Affairs, National Planning, Housing and Women Affairs.

A breakdown shows Senator Lawan was appointed chair of Defence Committee, while the chairman of the Senate Unity Forum, Senator Barnabas Gemade, was made the chairman of the Housing Committee.

Similarly, Senator Abu Ibrahim was named the chairman on Police Affairs; Senator Oluremi Tinubu, chairman, Committee on Women Affairs; Senator Gbenga Ashafa will head Land Transport Committee, and Kabiru Marafa, the Committee on National Identity Card.

Senators Ahmed Sani got Marine Transport; Mohammed Ohiare, Public Procurement; Ali Wakili, Poverty Alleviation, and George Akume, Army.

When PDP was leading the Senate, the APC (opposition parties) don't usually get up to 5 committees.
